The Story of Anant Chaturdashi
The Anant Vrat has a powerful story attached to it, narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthir during the time of Mahabharata.
Long ago, Sage Kaundinya was married to a pious woman named Sushila. One day, on the riverbank, Sushila saw many women performing a puja. Curious, she asked them about it. They explained it was the Anant Vrat dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his eternal form, worshipped with a 14-knotted thread.
Sushila too observed the vrat and tied the thread. But when Kaundinya saw it, he thought she was trying to control him with magic. In anger, he tore off the sacred thread and burned it. This insult to Anant Dev (Lord Vishnu) led to their downfall—gradually Kaundinya lost his wealth, peace, and happiness.
When he realized his mistake, he repented and wandered into the forest to seek forgiveness. After long penance, Lord Vishnu appeared and said:
“You insulted me, that’s why you suffered. But now that you have repented, if you observe the Anant Vrat properly for 14 consecutive years, all your troubles will end, and prosperity will return.”
Kaundinya followed this sincerely, and eventually regained wealth, peace, and happiness.
Similarly, Lord Krishna advised Yudhishthir to perform this vrat. By its power, the Pandavas overcame their struggles and regained their kingdom.
Significance
