The seven chakras in the human body are considered the centers of all cosmic energies. According to yogic scriptures, these chakras are crucial for maintaining good health, developing spiritual thoughts, and experiencing subtle divine power. The process to achieve this is called “Chitta Vritti Nirodh Kriya”—a method to calm the restless mind.

This practice falls under the broader scope of mantra-based yoga, including Dhyana Yoga (meditation), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Sankirtan Yoga (chanting), Japa Yoga (repetition of mantras), and Prem Yoga (yoga of love). Yogic scriptures recommend focusing on the seven chakras to stop the mind from wandering. Chakra meditation awakens the Kundalini energy, which then activates all the chakras. This leads to mental stability and the rise of spiritual thoughts.

Divine Light and Chakra Connection

Each chakra is connected to a divine energy field, represented by the glowing halos behind deities in ancient idols and paintings. These halos signify the divine light or aura that symbolizes the power of chakras. Just as the body contains subtle systems, chakras link the physical body to the subtle body—the invisible part of us that can only be experienced through spiritual practice.

With continued yogic practice, a person can perceive these chakras and the radiant energy that revolves around the meditator. In most people, chakras are present in three states. The ideal state is balance, which is rare. If someone regularly performs an activity connected to a specific chakra, that chakra becomes active. In contrast, unused chakras remain dormant.

Simplicity of Chakra Meditation

Yogic texts describe several forms of meditation, with chakra meditation being one of the simplest and most accessible. Anyone—children, elders, the sick, or the healthy—can practice it. Regular practice balances the five elements in the body: earth, water, fire, air, and space.

In this practice, the meditator focuses on each chakra one by one, beginning from the Muladhara (Root) Chakra and moving up to the Sahasrara (Crown) Chakra. Each chakra is visualized as a lotus of a specific color and number of petals. This method is universal and can be practiced regardless of race, age, religion, or background. It is a scientific approach to spiritual development.

The power of chakra meditation can only be realized through consistent practice. It purifies one’s consciousness and reveals the true essence of life. It leads to spiritual evolution and a vision of the Divine. No material wealth is required for this knowledge—only regular practice, confidence, and willpower.

In today’s world, this practice is extremely beneficial. It relieves stress, illness, suffering, and worry. It improves health, peace, and the quality of life. Even modern medical science recognizes its value.

Indian philosophy describes six systems, one of which is yoga. Sage Patanjali, in his Yoga Sutras, clearly describes the sequence and significance of each chakra, ensuring that no step in the practice is incomplete. Chakra meditation, especially, helps prevent diseases, boosts immunity, and relieves stress.

According to yogic texts, these seven chakras reside within the subtle body. Meditating on them gives rise to divine energy, vision, and knowledge. It allows one to experience the Divine through mind and soul. These chakras are:

  1. Muladhara (Root Chakra): Located between the genitals and the anus. It is the seat of Kundalini energy and associated with the earth element. It has a red four-petaled lotus.
  2. Swadhisthana (Sacral Chakra): Located in the pelvic region. Related to creativity and reproductive functions. It has a six-petaled lotus and is associated with the water element.
  3. Manipura (Navel Chakra): Located at the navel. Connected to digestion and personal power. It has a ten-petaled yellow lotus and is associated with the fire element.
  4. Anahata (Heart Chakra): Located near the heart. It governs emotions, love, and compassion. This chakra has a white twelve-petaled lotus and is related to the air element.
  5. Vishuddha (Throat Chakra): Located at the throat. It relates to expression, speech, and communication. This chakra has a sixteen-petaled grey lotus and is associated with the space element.
  6. Ajna (Third Eye Chakra): Located between the eyebrows. It is linked to intuition, insight, and higher consciousness. It has a golden two-petaled lotus.
  7. Sahasrara (Crown Chakra): Located at the top of the head. This is the center of divine connection and spiritual awakening. It has a multi-petaled lotus with rainbow-like colors and is the culmination of the meditation journey.

Chakra meditation is done while seated in a stable posture. Focus on each chakra one by one, visualize the associated lotus flower opening its petals, and experience the joy and peace it brings. Start from the Root Chakra and gradually ascend to the Crown Chakra. Then reverse the process, closing each lotus flower from top to bottom, and finally bring awareness back to the physical body.

After completing the practice, gently move the body, open the eyes slowly, and return to your daily life with calm and awareness.
